Armed zonal officers to check bikers on roads

New Delhi: Armed zonal officers (ZOs) would now be seen assisting the traffic policemen in a 15-day special drive that has been launched by Delhi Traffic Police at random spots in Delhi in each traffic circle with a special focus on bikers.

The move is seen as an attempt to check snatchers who are on the prowl in Delhi. Several cases of snatching have been reported in Delhi with some of the victims even grievously injured in the incidents.

The traffic police would be putting at least two teams with an armed ZO in each circle at least twice a day at different times and at random places. The senior traffic police officers have been asked to monitor the operation closely.

"Analysis of crime showed that a maximum number of snatching/robberies are committed by the criminals who are on motorcycles. Motorcycles who have riders and pillion in the age group where they can be active in crime are specifically checked and challaned for violations," said a senior police officer.

Delhi police also said that the incidents of crime are analyzed or mapped time-wise and area-wise on daily basis by the SDPO/ACP concerned. Possible escape routes for the identified areas are ascertained. Pickets are put at locations which are highly crime-prone or which have witnessed spurt in crime during the last week and the locations of the pickets are chosen in such a manner that different escape routes are covered on different dates.
