474 held in anti-liquor drive in GB Nagar

G B Nagar: In a crackdown against the consumption of liquor at public places, the Gautam Buddh Nagar police have arrested 474 people on Saturday for allegedly consuming alcohol at public places and driving vehicles after getting drunk. The police were getting repeated complaints about the increased incidents of consumption of liquor in public places. The police named this drive as 'Operation Clean-6', police officials said.

According to police, the consumption of liquor in public places was causing a lot of inconvenience to the people, especially for women. "Of the total arrests, 241 were made in city areas, while 233 in rural areas," they said.

"Breath analyser test was carried out at various places and 15 people were booked for drunk driving also," police said.

Vaibhav Krishna, Senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Gautam Budh Nagar said that there were complaints that drinking at public places was causing a nuisance. "As such, a drive was carried out across the city on Saturday night and the arrests were made from all the police station areas across the district. Similar drives will be repeated at regular intervals. Routine checks will go on," he added. "The drive was done by GB Nagar police for three hours and it began from 7.40 pm. The 'Operation Clean-6' drive was carried out against people driving vehicle after getting drunk and those drinking outside liquor shops in violation of rules" said Krishna.

As many as 52 checkpoints were created across the district, the officer said.
