3 held at IGIA for smuggling gold

New Delhi: The Customs at IGI airport arrested three people including two Dubai nationals for smuggling gold into the country.

According to investigators, gold worth over Rs 25 lakh was recovered from their possession. According to customs, in one of the cases reported on December 2, they seized around 400 grams of gold, worth over Rs 15 lakh, in the form of kadas, from two Dubai origin passengers.

During further investigation both the passengers admitted to have smuggled gold into the country in the past too. Meanwhile, in another case reported on December 3, a person was arrested with six cut pieces of gold worth over Rs 10 lakh at the IGI. The gold was concealed inside his rectum.

During April-September this year, customs officials at Indira Gandhi International airport have seized foreign currencies worth over Rs 9 crore. According to investigators, these currencies were mostly used for purchasing gold from other countries.
