15-yr-old tries to foil snatching bid in Shalimar Bagh, takes bullet

New Delhi: The Capital's menacing gun culture reared its ugly head on Friday, as a 15-year-old boy was shot at by two bike-borne men when he foiled their attempt to snatch a man's chain in north west Delhi's Anand Vihar.

As the victim Rohit, a victim of Uttar Pradesh, is undergoing treatment, Delhi Police said that investigation is underway to nab the accused.

The incident is a grim reminder of another case in Anand Vihar in September, where a man was shot dead by bike-borne robbers when he tried to catch them.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West) Aslam Khan said the incident came to light at around 8.30 am when a PCR call was received where the caller claimed that two men had shot a youth in Rambagh area of Shalimar Bagh.

"Two snatchers on a black Apache tried to snatch the chain of Praveen Kumar Jain, a resident of BW-Block Shalimar Bagh, from Rambagh Park when he was drinking coconut water outside the park," said the DCP.

She added that the culprits did not succeed in snatching the chain as they fell from the bike. Rohit, the boy who was selling coconut water, tried to nab the snatchers, and in the ensuing scuffle, the snatchers shot him in the left shoulder.

"Rohit is out of danger, according to doctors," Khan said, adding that his family members said they came to know of the incident through other vendors at the spot.

"The vendors told me that two persons had come on a bike. One of whom was wearing a helmet and other was hiding his face with a piece of cloth.

"They first went to the park and then tried to snatch the chain, but fell down when Rohit tried to grab one of the accused. One of the accused got up and shot him and then fled," said a family member.
