Delhi to get underwater world

If you had any doubts about Delhi getting international, now is the time to shed them. Expats are growing in numbers, restaurants serving global cuisine are springing up in every corner of the city, the international music scene is growing exponentially and what have you.

And now, the city with a dying river, aka Yamuna, is getting an aquarium of its own. On the lines of Underwater World in Sentosa, Singapore, the Capital’s own aquarium is set to be built over a carpet area of approximately 1,00,000 square feet in Greater Noida. The public aquarium, called Blue Planet, is being built at a cost of Rs 750 crore approximately.

The aquarium will be based on the biotope concept and will house freshwater and saltwater biotopes replicating the Rift Valley Lakes of Africa like Lake Victoria, Malawi and Tanganyika and also deltaic Sunderbans and Ganges.

There will also be some species-based tanks. You can get a glimpse of sharks, lion fish among others as you walk through the transparent acrylic tunnels.

‘Many of the exhibits will follow a combination of terrestrial and oceanic themes. Along with this, exhibits carry a particular geographical theme that is both educational and recreational in its function to visitors without compromising on aesthetics,’ said Sindu Zhang Huihan, President, Andover Group, which is building the aquarium in association with Delhi-based Bhasin group.

Visitors will also be entertained with the tales of little mermaid. A six metre deep tank with a transparent window is being created for mermaid shows which will involve choreographed pyrotechnics.
