Delhi takes on summer with beer

The excise department of the Delhi government will not be complaining about the horrid heat wave across northern India, as the torturous summer has given it a huge boost in revenue through the sale of beer.

The excise department officials said that in the last three months – April, May and June – there has been increase in the sale of beer by over 30 per cent. So far this year, it has earned over Rs 650 crore from excise, in which beer has given it a major part of this amount.

The department plans to earn Rs 2,750 crore through excise this year and officials say that the sale of beer across the city, through different agencies, has put it on the right track. In fact, this year many liquor outlets have arranged for selling chilled beer to customers.

'There is marked increase in the demand of beer in view of the hot weather. We had the freezer in our shop but we found it to be insufficient seeing the hot weather condition. So, we have installed a better freezer in our shop. Now, we are selling only chilled beer to our customers,' said a staff at a DSIDC-run liquor shop in Gole Market in central Delhi.

Officials said that beer consumption in the city has crossed to over six crore bottles this year, in which the best beer sale has been recorded in the last three months. Last year, during the same period, city had consumed over four crore bottles.

'The sale of beer is increasing with each passing day with the rising temperature. The sale in liquor vends has almost doubled. Normally the month of June sees the maximum number of beer sale. This year there was good demand in May this year also and the the demand is still there. Seeing the current weather pattern, it seems that the sale of beer will stay like this in next two-three months,' said an excise official.

The last year was not so good for the excise department, as rainfall had limited the sale of beer.

The city has about 460 liquor vends, including department stores. Beer is also sold in 360 restaurants of the city.
