Delhi Police to launch self-defence course for north-east women on 2 Oct

‘The new manual is very well-researched and it deals with almost every kind of emergency situation, which women, walking on the road or taking public transportation can face,’ said Robin Hibu, joint commissioner of police (Special Unit for Women and Children).

He further said that the manual shall deal with a mixed variety of martial arts, depending upon the kind of situation faced by women.

‘The research on the women safety manual is over and the booklet is in its development phase now and we shall release it on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti’, added Robin Hibu. He also added, ‘it will be distributed among women in crowded zones like markets, metro stations, bus stands and the university campus.’

The manual has been written and illustrated by Vishal Jaiswal, chief instructor (Delhi) of the Japan Shotokan Karate Do Kanninjuku Organization. He also trains Delhi Police officials who further impart self-defence training to school girls.

Robin also announced that a six-month long self-defence course will also be launched by Delhi Police on Gandhi Jayanti. ‘So far in 2014, we have imparted self-defence training to more than 11,000 girls from various schools, but now we have decided to shift our focus on adult women, especially those from the north-eastern states,’ said Varsha Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (Special Unit for Women and Children).

On Monday, Delhi Police  also inaugurated its ‘anti eve-teasing women trainer’s training programme’, for the capacity building of police officials who impart self-defence training to school girls in the city. The programme was inaugurated by Taj Hassan, special commissioner of police (Crime).

‘This intensive training programme will last for a period of six months to one year, after which, the trained police officials, dressed as civillians, will be deployed on buses, metros, the university campuses and other places such as Munirka, Mukherjee Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar and Mahipalpur’, Robin Hibu added.
