Delhi on way to better road transport

In an attempt to bring positive change in the road transport scenario of the capital, Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved three different infrastructure projects worth Rs 3,015 crore, to be facilitated by PWD.

A stretch of 20 km, from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad, on Outer Ring Road would be redeveloped. Three flyovers at Bhalaswa Chowk, Burari Chowk and Mukundpur Chowk would be constructed.

Two loops at Mukundpur Chowk for right turn and a six-lane parallel road would be constructed from Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar to Wazirabad Chowk. A foot over bridge to cross NH– I near Wazirabad Chowk; 3.30 km elevated road from Anandkunj junction to Mira Bagh T junction; 2.60 km elevated road from Somvihar Chowk to Depali Chowk; and another 2.60 km elevated road from power house Pitampura to Railway Over Bridge at Mukarba Chowk are also being planned.

According to sources, these new projects would remove traffic obstacles and facilitate its smooth flow. Ring Road and Outer Ring Road would become almost signal free.

Also, with commissioning of the new projects, it is expected that there would be huge savings on fuel and travelling time for daily commuters. The new projects would also ensure that Outer Ring Road and Ring Road, which are being considered the lifelines of the city, would, to a larger extent, be made traffic jam free.

Apart from these, foot over bridge for pedestrians, bus lanes for buses, green belt, footpaths, cycle tracks and rain water harvesting would also be undertaken. The re-engineering of 20 km stretch on Outer Ring Road would benefit the residents of Vikaspuri, Janakpuri, Jawala Heri, Paschim Vihar, Bhehra Enclave, Mangolpuri, Pitampura, Rohini, Sarasvati Vihar, Prashant Vihar, Badli, Haiderpur, Shalimar Bagh, Mukundpur, Burari, Nirankari Colony and Bhalaswa.

Government sources said, projects have been cleared by Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering Centre) and Delhi Urban Arts Commission.

The project on Outer Ring Road and another project for improvement of Ring Road from Prembaripul to Azadpur would approximately cost Rs 2,485 crore together.

In order to ensure optimum utilisation of the existing first ever elevated road from Sarai Kale Khan to Jawahar Lal Nehru (JLN) stadium, the cabinet has also decided to extend it further to INA. The proposed extended elevated road would be 8.30 km road and would have six lanes. The road would be extended at an estimated costs of Rs 530 crore.

The existing elevated road was constructed during the Commonwealth Games to provide a dedicated route to connect games village near Akshardham temple and JLN Stadium.
