Damaged CCTV footage affects Maruti probe

Over 100 hours of wait by the Gurgaon Police resulted in a big disappointment. The police was hoping that the CCTV footage recovered from the Manesar plant of Maruti Suzuki would help them to channel the investigation in to the right direction. But it was found on Sunday that the CCTV footage that the police had recovered immediately after Wednesday's riot, was damaged.

'Experts are still checking the CCTV footage that was recovered from the plant, so the extent of the damage is not clear yet. They are trying their best to recover as much as the footage as possible, said Maheshwar Dayal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), adding, 'The CCTV footage is very important to help identify the main accused and the others who have been named by the senior management of Maruti Suzuki, in the case.'

Dayal added that from what knowledge the police has about the case at present, it seems to have been a planned violence. It is possible that the attack at the Maruti plant was a conspiracy by the union and workers.

After the CCTV  footage recovered from the plant was found to be damaged, Gurgaon police on Sunday evening apprehended nine union leaders who names had been mentioned in the FIR lodged by the senior management of Maruti Suzuki.

Sources in the police told Millennium Post that the CBI enquiry demanded by the family of Awanish Kumar Dev, general Manager (HR), who died in the riot, has been postponed. Haryana Police is waiting for the report by the  Special Investigation Team (SIT), after which the decision regarding further investigation will be made.

'We don't know how much longer we will have to wait for justice. People whose names were mentioned in the FIR have not been arrested yet. All this time, the police was asking us to wait for information can be gathered from the CCTV footage, but now its been found to be damaged,' said Superna Prasad, wife of Awanish Kumar Dev.

Raids are being carried out in Haryana as well as the neighbouring states to nab the accused. It was alleged by the Maruti officials that out of the 91 people who were earlier arrested, 51 were innocent. But Maheshwar Dayal said 'No one has got the authority to judge who is the culprit. The court will take the decision.'

After the press conference held on Saturday by RC Bhargava, chairman of Maruti Suzuki India, the employees of Maruti Suzuki are pressurising the senior management to sort out  the matter as soon as possible. In the conference, Bhargava said, 'There is a lockout at the plant now. To me, what is more important is the safety of my colleagues, rather than producing some cars to make money.'
