Cops nab software engineer for morphing woman's pic

With the arrest of a software engineer, the cyber cell of Noida police claims to have solved a case of cyber crime, where the offender had allegedly morphed pictures of an engaged woman and sent threatening messages to her and her fiancee on facebook and email.

The software engineer, identified as Rajan Gupta, 25, is a B Tech graduate from Punjab Technical University. He used to work in a local IT company with the woman. He allegedly made advances towards the woman and when she spurned him, he started sending threatening messages, vulgar morphed pictures and intimidating emails to the woman and her fiancee.

Since the accused was a software engineer who was aware of the intricacies of computers, he went to great lengths to avoid getting caught. In order to avoid suspicion, the accused hacked into the email id and duplicated the sim of another male colleague of his, a certain Vivek Pant. He also used Vivek's laptop to morph pictures. He allegedly harassed the woman and her fiancee for close to an year.

This led to the fiancee of the woman calling of their engagement. Their marriage, which was scheduled to happen in Bulandshahar, never took place.

Fed up with the harrasement, the woman's father registered a FIR with the police on 4 April. After a wait of 11 days, the police finally traced the IP address from which the emails were being sent as belonging to Rajan. The accused was arrested near Sectors 12-22 in Noida. On interrogation, he revealed that he had done this to break the marriage of the woman and cast aspertions on her character as she had rejected his advances.

Shalini, an IPS officer training as an ASP,  said, 'This is one of those rare cases of cyber crime where the criminal was a trained hand'. Bishwajeet Srivastav, CO city commented that  had this case not been solved the harrasement of an innocent woman would have continued.
