Cops asked to re-investigate child trafficking case

The Delhi police has been directed by a court to re-investigate a case of child trafficking in which a minor girl was allegedly raped after she was sold by her father.
The court’s directions came while dealing with a case of child trafficking in which a 14-year-old girl, a resident of West Bengal, was sold by her father for Rs 5,000 to a woman Munni who had brought her to Delhi.
It asked the police to also investigate the role of Munni who had allegedly left the girl in accused Raju Yadav’s house where she was raped this year.
‘ACP Sweta Chauhan, who is present in the court, submits that further investigation would be necessary on the aspect of trafficking of child.
‘Further, the role of natural father of the girl and Munni, who had brought the child to Delhi, is also required to be investigated. A formal request in this regard is also made by the SHO and it is permitted,’ Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau said.
During the proceedings, the girl told the court that she was living in West Bengal with her mother and two siblings at her maternal grandmother’s house as her father had left them and had re-married.
She also said her father had taken her to the house of his second wife and the couple had then sold her to Munni.
The court asked the police to trace the victim’s mother and sent the girl to ‘Nirmal Chhaya’, a home for women, with a direction to its superintendent not to allow anyone to meet her.
The judge also directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police of North Delhi District to take appropriate action against the investigating officer (IO) of the case, sub inspector Upkar Kaur, for her conduct and lapses which led to ‘total loss of evidence’.
The court pulled up the IO for failing to get the victim counselled from an NGO and said that in the absence of any natural guardian of the victim, it was necessary for the officer to have got an NGO involved for taking the girl’s consent for medical examination. The judge also said the ossification test report of the girl opined that her age was between 16-18 years whereas she appeared to be less than 14 years of age. The court has fixed the matter for 16 January directing the SHO of Adarsh Nagar police station to place a fresh ossification test report before it.
