Cops arrest more than 10,000 in multiple raids

This is reportedly the first instance of such large-scale raids taking place simultaneously across the state. The move comes at a time when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directed her office to take action against those who unnecessarily harass people and demand extortion money for undertaking construction or repair work of buildings. People were arrested irrespective of their political leaning during the raids on Sunday.

Anuj Sharma, ADG (Law and Order), said: “During the raid, 1023 people were arrested as there were specific complaints against them. Preventive arrests were of 7372 and 1520 people against whom there were warrants were also arrested.”

Sharma held a press conference at Nabanna on Monday evening. He stated that raids across the state were conducted simultaneously so that the accused would not get an opportunity to move from one district to another to avoid arrest. “If raids had been conducted in one district or in some selected districts, some of the accused would have taken refuge in another district. But there was no scope for such a move when raids took place at the same time,” said Sharma, adding that similar exercise will often take place. Raids took place at the known hideouts of many criminals, while the people against whom there were specific complaints were arrested based on tip-offs. Firearms, ammunition, bombs, illegal firecrackers, illicit liquor and narcotic substances were seized during the raids.

Around 135 people were arrested from Burdwan against whom there were specific complaints. In Nadia, 126 people were arrested on specific charges and 223 were arrest for preventive reasons.In North 24 Parganas, the total figure of specific arrests is around 96 and for preventive arrests the numbers stands at 197. The number of arrests on specific charges in South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad and rural parts of Howrah were around 60, 68 and 61, respectively. Officers involved in the raids said that the arrests of such a large number of people who are involved in “illegal activities will convey a clear message and the law and order situation in the state will improve further.”

On Sunday, a total of 10900 people were prosecuted in the state on charges of violating traffic norms. The figure also includes cases in which people were booked for riding motorbikes without wearing helmets.

In the past few days, the police intensified action against extortionists and as a result 45 people were arrested on charges of threatening people to give money to undertake construction of buildings and high-rises.
