Constable shot dead; mock threat turns real

In a bizarre incident, a 22-year-old police constable was shot dead by another constable on Monday in the barrack of seventh battalion of Delhi Police located in Malviya Nagar area, South district. Apparently, the accused was playing around with a rifle, mock threatening the victim, when the rifle went off by accident, the police said.

'We are verifying whether it was just a freaky incident or if there exists any personnel enmity between them,' said Chaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). However, a murder case under the section 302 of IPC has been registered against the accused, identified as Sunil, who has been arrested, Sharma added.

The deceased, identified as Dinesh, hailing from Bikaner in Rajasthan, had joined the force in 2010. He was living in the third floor of the barrack of seventh battalion located in the premises of Police Training School (PTS).

'We received the call around 11 am. When we reached the spot, we found Dinesh lying on the floor in a pool of blood. He was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where doctors declared him brought death,' said a police officer.

The investigation revealed that Sunil was carrying the rifle, which was issued to one of their batch mate, Kalu. Sunil who was pointing the rifle towards Dinesh and had apparently pulled the trigger by accident, killing Dinesh. Kalu was inside the barrack when the incident occurred.

In a statement to the police, Sunil told it was an unintentional act, said a police official. The police is also looking for clues for Kalu's probable involvement in the incident.

This is the second incident within four days when a Delhi police constable died inside the premises of PTC located in Malviya Nagar. Before this, a young constable died in suspicious circumstances in the terrace of seventh battalion's barrack. His body was found in 1,000-litre water tank on the terrace.

There is no interconnection between these two cases that occurred within four days, clarified Sharma when asked. She said the water tank case is being investigated. 'No foul play has been found so far. We are waiting for postmortem report,' Sharma added.

There have been no arguments between the deceased and the accused before the incident took place, added Sharma.

Sunil hails from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan, while Kalu belongs to Jaipur. All three belong to the 2010 batch.
