Cong MLAs disagree with Sheila on CNG

A day after the announcement of five per cent value added tax (VAT) on CNG by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in her budget, both the opposition and the Congress MLAs have demanded a rollback on the proposal.

On Tuesday, just before the budget session could begin, the opposition staged a two-minute walkout opposing the Delhi government's shocker to common people.

Monday's budget saw an imposition of five per cent VAT on CNG, a first for Delhi. This is expected to translate into an increase in auto-rickshaw and taxi fares as well as prices of daily commodities. As most public transport in Delhi run on CNG, smaller traders will also be affected.

According to sources, some Congress MLAs met Dikshit, asking her to rollback the increase in the VAT. It is said that the Congress MLAs Naseeb Singh, Kanwar Karan Singh and Narender Nath along with the Lok Sabha MP Mahabal Mishra met the chief minister.

Talking to Millennium Post, Mishra said, 'It will affect the common man indirectly. We expect that CM will look into the matter and rollback VAT on CNG.' After the added tax, the CNG prices will go up to Rs 37.20 per kilogramme from Rs 35.45 per kilogramme.

Meanwhile, auto-rickshaw and taxi unions are threatening to go on strike on 31 May, demanding a hike in fares.

When Dikshit was asked about the rollback, she said, 'We will discuss in the coming session about the possibility of rollback and at the House, I will speak about it.'

The Delhi government will earn approximately Rs 100 crore from the VAT imposition on CNG.
