City’s bus shelters in a shambles: Commuters left in the lurch

The travellers are having a hard time as they have to wait for buses of their respective routes in the scorching heat or torrential rain without a shade above them. Some of these swanky bus shelters, constructed during the Commonwealth Games, have been wrecked in the absence of financial support from Delhi Transport Department.

There are numbers of bus shelters which have been damaged over the years, with advertisement panels causing most of the damage. Thick layers of dust and stains make these bus stands perfect examples of the administration’s apathy and poor maintenance.

According to sources, there are around 4,627 bus queue shelters in Delhi in which around 1,829 have been revamped while around 1,600 lies in areas that do not attract advertisers as these shelters are either vandalised or damaged by unknown miscreants.

Around 1,173 shelters have been waiting for the private advisory assigned for their maintenance.
These bus shelters are being maintained by private companies. It was found that those bus stops that are situated in the heart of the city are regularly cleaned; however, the remaining are in a pathetic condition. During the visits, dust bins from these places were also found missing.

Meanwhile, Kuldeep Singh Gangar, Special Commissioner (Planning and Project), transport department, Delhi, told Millennium Post over phone: ‘We have issued the tenders of these 1,173 bus queue shelters twice — first in October, 2013, and again in May, 2014, but none of the private advertisers bid for it, as it takes around Rs 10-15 lakh to revamp a bus queue shelter. Now, we will ask the government to provide the fund to maintain these shelters.’
