Businessman duped of crores for mining license

Four persons cheated a Karnataka-based businessman of Rs 3.50 crore on the pretext of providing a licence for coal mining. They also used the name of a Member of Parliament for the purpose.

The victim, Suresh Solanki, who hails from Karnataka’s Bellary district, had sought help from Binturi, Sanjay Bedia, Rahul Kapoor and Imshan Ali Parrey after Supreme Court banned coal mining in several districts of Karnataka last year.

‘The accused allegedly threatened Suresh of dire consequences if he asked his money back. They also claimed that they had contact with the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and could eliminate him and his family members,’ a police officer said.

One of the accused, Binturi, who also hails from Karnataka, is known to Suresh, and in May 2011, after seeing Suresh suffer losses due to the ban, had claimed that he had good contacts in the national capital, which could help his company restart mining in Karnataka.

On this promise, Suresh arrived in Delhi along with Binturi and met Sanjay, Rahul and Imshan at Constitution Club of India’s coffee shop. ‘After the meeting, the accused allegedly claimed that Suresh’s problems could be solved by ministers and senior government officials, if he was ready to pay Rs 5 crore,’ the official added.

As Suresh was facing a financial crisis due to the Supreme Court decision, he started paying the demanded money in installments and also paid for stay of Binturi, Sanjay, Rahul and Imshan at several five-star hotels in the city. During one of his visits to the capital, Suresh was promised that he would be taken to meet a Union Minister. They did take him to a minister’s residence, but did not fix any meeting. ‘The gang later claimed that the minister was willing to help if he was paid money immediately,’ the official said.

However, after months of being given promise after promise, Suresh realised that he was being cheated. Subsequently, he started asking the accused to return his money, but they started threatening him. ‘They also claimed that the could get him involved in fake cases regarding mining in Karnataka,’ the official added.

A case of cheating under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Parliament Street police station and investigation is on.
