Patna kitchens to get PNG supply, vehicles to run on CNG

New Delhi: Gas Authority of India (GAIL)'s aim to supply piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) in Patna is going to turn into a reality. PNG and CNG which are comparatively cheaper and convenient fuel than the conventional liquified petroleum gas (LPG), petrol, and diesel. With its ambitious project, GAIL would take a giant stride towards a pollution-free Patna.

On February 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating two CNG filling stations and also start PNG supply to cater to 1500 houses. The PM will also launch the PNG station at BIT premises via video conferencing. The GAIL is busy with the preparations of its ambitious project in Patna.

GAIL executive director KB Singh, Chief General Manager Pawan Sharma, and Deputy General Manager (Construction) KC Dwivedi jointly inspected the preparation ahead of PM's visit.

To promote the use of CNG, the local administration is not going to offer any new permits for the diesel-run auto-rickshaws in the capital city to ensure a greener and cleaner Patna. The CNG kits, once installed, will reduce auto tariffs in the city, where petrol is being sold at Rs 75/litre.

KB Singh informed that nearly 1500 households at Jagdev Path will start getting uninterrupted PNG supply directly in their kitchens from February 18. They aim to reach nearly 5000 houses by the end of February. As of now, the PNG connection is being given to the individuals or to the residential societies.

The two CNG filling stations in Patna have been set up at Indian Oil Petrol Pump Auto Care (Bailey Road) and City Centre Petrol Pump situated at Nagla (Patna City) respectively. The Bailey Road CNG station will get direct CNG supply, while the Nagla-based filling station will get the supply from a tanker.

Both the moves are going to provide a major relief to the kitchens, personal vehicles, public transport, energy consuming industries, hotels and restaurants.

Around 5000 PNG meters have already been installed in Patna. Initially, 5 BIT hostels (commercial) while 24 kitchens will receive the PNG supply. The households in the areas adjoining Jagdev Path and Aarah Garden will start getting the gas supply soon. Subsequently, 5000 kitchens in Jalalpur City, Danapur Railway Colony will also get the PNG connection in the first phase. In the second phase, Shastri Nagar, Electricity Board Colony will be covered while the third phase would cover Gandhi Maidan, Frazer Road, and Bailey Road area. Within 6 months Kankadbagh Colony will also get the PNG supply.

Chief General Manager at GAIL, Pawan Sharma inspected the meters installed at BIT on Thursday. Commercial PNG is already being used at thousands of hotels, dairies, bakeries, cold storages, malls, shopping complexes, and commercial institutes all over the country. The PNG supplies non-stop natural gas to these commercial units. Since it gets delivered directly from the station, it also saves the companies a lot of money. If one compares it with commercial LPG, then PNG is a very cost-effective option.

PNG will bring major relief to the people of Patna as it is cheaper and convenient than the LPG cylinders, which are widely used in the country. As PNG reaches directly into the kitchen, it prevents the customers from the hassles of booking and waiting for it be delivered at their doorsteps.

Apart from being eco-friendly, it is also very safe to use as it removes the eventuality of an explosion as there is no cylinder involved. Since it directly reaches the user's kitchen there is no chance of getting duped of being sold a lesser quantity of gas. The industry is constantly working towards increasing the reach of PNG, keeping its advantages in mind.

There are three automobile distributors in Patna, who sell CNG auto-rickshaws. The buyers can get them registered with the transport department. GAIL has already sent a letter to the transport department for the registration of CNG vehicles.
