EESL's LED success story: UK done, up next Malaysia

New Delhi: Buoyed by the success of LED bulb distribution at $1 per unit in India and the UK, the state-owned EESL is getting ready to enter Malaysia next month with an initial plan to sell 1 million lamps.
Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) is also seized with plans to sell in the country other energy-efficient appliances such as fans and tubelights -- which it distributes in India.
Moreover, it is scouting for business opportunities that will offer energy efficiency solutions in Malaysia. EESL distributes such bulbs at around Rs 70 per unit under the UJALA scheme of the central government and has brought down their prices through bulk procurement without any subsidy.
"The government of Melaka has recently asked EESL to replicate an UJALA programme in Melaka, Malaysia. The programme will be launched during the Urban Environmental Accords (UEA) Melaka Summit 2017 in Malaysia scheduled on September 7-9, 2017," an official said.
The official said, "The expression of interest is for 1 million LED bulbs in a phased manner in a lot size of 0.2 million pieces. They are looking at a local model for initial distribution of 1 million bulbs."
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Green Growth Asia (GGA) and EESL will be signed next month on the sidelines of the Melaka summit for implementation of the scheme.
EESL has already distributed over 25 crore of LED bulbs in India through its distribution channels. The use of such bulbs has led to annual energy saving of 33 billion kwh, which translates into yearly cost saving of more than Rs 13,200 crore and carbon dioxide reduction of more than 2.68 crore tonnes.
