India to help Ethiopia set up 10 new sugar factories

The National Sugar Institute (NSI) has entered into an agreement with Ethiopia for setting up 10 new sugar factories, besides a sugar institute, in the East African state.

The NSI will assist Ethiopian Sugar Corporation (ESC) in setting up 10 new sugar factories and raise the existing sugar production there, the Institute's Director Narendra Mohan said here on Tuesday.

At present, there are only seven sugar factories in Ethiopia which produce about 3.60 lakh tonne of sugar annually.

After the new factories come up, the total sugar production in Ethiopia will shoot up to 46 lakh tonnes a year.

Mohan said a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed between the chief executive officer of ESC, M Kedan, and the NSI.
