Buddha shows way for poll salvation in DUSU election

Buddham Sharanam Gacchami seems to be the mantra for candidates of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) polls. As many as six candidates contesting for four major posts - president, vice president, secretary and joint secretary - are in first year of the post graduation programme in Buddhist Studies. They have no qualms in claiming that quest for Buddha is an easy way to seek electoral success.

‘I have been associated with the party for more than five years. So I thought this year was the right time to contest elections as I have proved my worth. As for contesting DUSU polls, one has to be a student of DU, so I took admission in MA Buddhist studies. It was a choice not out of interest for the subject but for polls,’ said AA Ameet Sidhu Teema, who is contesting for General Secretary from National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).

Mohit Nagar who is contesting for president and Pravesh Malik who is contesting for vice-president from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) are pursuing Buddhist studies. From the youth wing of Congress, the NSUI, Ameet Sidhu Teema and Abhishek Chaudhary are contesting for post of secretary and joint secretary respectively and both are enrolled in Buddhist Studies.

Interestingly, Vikramaditya, candidate for post of joint secretary from the stable of believers in the Marxist-Leninist philosophy, the All India Students’ Association, is also enrolled in Buddhist studies. When pointed out, Vikramaditya said: ‘I like the subject. Also, along with pursuing this course, I can also study for UPSC.’
