Nabanita Deb Sen, voice of a generation, passes away at 81

Kolkata: Noted litterateur Nabanita Deb Sen died at her South Kolkata residence on Thursday evening. She was suffering from cancer for quite some time. She was 81 and is survived by two daughters Antara and Nandana. She is the former wife of Amartya Sen.

Born of poet parents Narendra Deb and Radharani Debi, Nabanita was raised in an atmosphere of literature, poetry and music. Her ancestral home "Bhalobasa" where she lived till her death on Thursday evening was a literature hub where stalwarts of the post-Rabindranath era like Buddhadeb Bose, Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, Jibanananda Das and Premendra Mitra were regular visitors. Her parents were very close to Sarat Chandra as well. Nabanita graduated from Presidency College and did her post graduation in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University. Later, she did her Masters with distinction from Harvard University and completed her PhD from Indiana University.

She was the first woman president of the Presidency Alumni Association. It may be recalled that on her request Nobel laureate Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee had visited her house during his brief visit to Kolkata recently.
