Governor's interference 'most unfortunate & shocking', says TMC

Kolkata: Taking serious exception to Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar going to the "so-called rescue" of Union Minister Babul Supriyo at Jadavpur University on Thursday evening after the latter was shown black flags by agitating students, the Trinamool Congress termed it as "most unfortunate and shocking."

Partha Chatterjee, TMC secretary general, issued a statement which stated that after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to the Governor, she repeatedly asked him not to visit the campus and requested him to give some time to the state government to peacefully resolve the issue and bring the situation under control.

But instead, the Governor went ahead to visit Jadavpur University without taking the state government into confidence even after repeated requests from the Chief Minister. Not only that, before going there, he also issued "two press statements" that said: "This is a very serious reflection on the law and order in the State".

The TMC press statement read: "He of course did not offer any comment on the vandalism perpetrated by BJP and ABVP goons in the Jadavpur University campus today (Thursday). We strongly oppose his political views. Neither TMCP nor police are involved in the incident. It is absolutely with BJP and Leftist union students versus the BJP leader. So question of law and order does not arise. The state police facilitated in taking the BJP leader and the Governor out of the troubled spot."

The release further read: "The vandalism perpetrated in Jadavpur University today (Thursday) by BJP goons is a stark reminder of what happened in the political rally in front of Calcutta University and vandalisation of the bust of Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar in Vidyasagar College before the Lok Sabha election. We do not have words to condemn such shocking acts of violence and trouble-mongering."
