New Delhi: Ignorance is not always bliss, particularly in taking preventive measures to get protected from getting infected to COVID-19 as India has yet again reported 81,466 fresh cases — the biggest jump in daily new infections the country has reported in the last six months. India had reported nearly 81,000 cases on October 1, 2020.

After the sudden spurt in COVID-19 cases, the Centre swung into action and held a high-level review meeting with chief secretaries, DGPs and health secretaries of all states and UTs over the issue. At the meeting, which was chaired by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, the 11 states marked as "states of grave concern" were asked to take strict action to contain the contagion.

The 11 states of grave concern are Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Haryana as they have contributed 90 per cent of COVID-19 cases, 90.5 per cent of deaths in 14 days till March 31.

As per Health Ministry's report, on Friday, Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 47,827, followed by Chhattisgarh with 4,617 new infections and Karnataka with 4,234 new cases.

In India, the confirmed cases stood at 1,23,03,131, which includes 6,14,696 active cases, 1,15,25,039 recoveries and 1,63,396 deaths. The country witnessed 469 fatalities and 50,356 recoveries in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise, states have also flung into action and started imposing lockdown and night curfews in selective districts to stop the transmission of the infection.

Taking a lead, Durg district in Chhattisgarh has imposed a lockdown for 9 days starting from April 6, while Pune in Maharashtra has imposed a 12-hour night curfew for a week.

Raipur and Durg districts are the state's worst affected in the second wave of the disease. The state government has also imposed night curfews from 9 pm to 6 am in the districts of Raipur, Gorela-Pendra-Marwahi, Sukma, Raigad, Korba, Mungeli, Rajnandgaon, Surguja, Surajpur, Jashpur and Bastar.

The Madhya Pradesh government has placed urban areas of Chhindwara district and Ratlam city under lockdown, while it will come into force in Betul district and parts of Khargone from Friday night to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. The lockdown in Chhindwara's urban areas and Ratlam city came into force from 10 pm on Thursday, which will continue till 6 am on April 5.

In Pune, a 12-hour night curfew (6 pm to 6 am) has been imposed and it would be implemented from Saturday for a period of one week. During the night curfew, religious places, hotels and bars, shopping malls, and movie theatres will remain closed and only home deliveries of food, medicines and other essential services will be allowed in this period.

Similarly, the BS Yediyurappa-led Karnataka government has announced fresh restrictions across the state. Protest marches and classes from VI to IX have been suspended in the state.

In Rajasthan, the night curfew timing has been increased to 7 hours from 10 pm to 5 am in the cities/towns of Ajmer, Bhilwara, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur, Sagwada (Dungarpur), Kushalgarh (Banswara), Chittorgarh and Abu Road (Sirohi).
