CM urges media to report truth

Kolkata: On the National Press Day, describing media as the fourth pillar of democracy, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged journalists to fearlessly report the truth.

"On the occasion of #NationalPressDay, my best wishes to all #journalists. #Media is the fourth pillar of #democracy. Always report the truth fearlessly. Be inspired by Rabindranath Tagore's immortal words, "Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high...," Banerjee wrote on her Twitter handle.

The First Press Commission (in 1956) had envisioned a 'Press Council' to protect freedom of the press in India and a higher ideal in journalism. After that, the Press Council was established on 4 July 1966 in India which started its work from November 16, 1966. From that day, November 16 is celebrated as National Press Day every year for a free and responsible press in the country.
