Barasat rape: Mamata wants death for culprits

On Monday, national television flashed pictures of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee visiting a gangrape victim’s village pillion riding a motorcycle. It is a photo op no politician would have wanted to miss. Just that, no other politician in recent memory has done such a thing i.e. risk life and limb to reach out to people in distress.

The West Bengal chief minister, who visited Kamduni village in Barasat in north 24 Parganas pillion riding for about 2.5 kilometres, said: ‘The chargesheet would be given within 15 days. There will be a fast track court to hear this case. We are also expecting that the court orders death for the culprits,’ said Banerjee.

Banerjee paid a visit to the residence of the 20-year-old girl who was raped and murdered earlier this month at Kamduni village. Banerjee met the girl’s family and promised that a chargesheet would be filed in a week’s time and the state would demand death for the culprits.

The college student was on her way home from college after an exam on 7 June when she was reportedly dragged inside a walled compound by a group of men who raped her and then killed her. Six people have been arrested so far.The incident has triggered angry protests by residents who attacked police vehicles.
