Australian Life Sciences & Health Care Mission delegation in India

A 12-member Australian Life Sciences and Health Care delegation is in India on a four-day visit to showcase and exchange views and technology expertise in its industry as part of the Australian Innovation Showcase initiative by the Australian Government to develop new trade and investment opportunities.

Kylie Bell, Trade and Investment Commissioner, South Asia, Australian Trade Commission, stated that the Australian government’s gross expenditure on science, research and innovation was $ 8.0 billion in 2013-14 and it had recently announced a $ 18 billion Medical Research Future Fund within six years that would be the largest medical research endowment fund globally and would see current funding towards medical research double by 2022.

The areas of coverage by the delegation include oncology, neurosciences, tropical medicines, medical devices, clinical trials and development research, among others, said Nicola Watkinson, senior trade and investment commissioner, South Asia, Australian Trade Commission.

‘This is the largest concentration of Australian scientific and research know-how to be showcased in India in the life sciences sector and the interest from India has been overwhelming, signifying the potential for further strengthening Australia-India partnerships,’ she said.
