Attacks and counter-attacks intensify in U’Khand politics

Attacks and counter-attacks have intensified in state politics, after state BJP president Tirath Singh Rawat’s statement that Harish Rawat-led government is unstable and opposition BJP is in a position to topple the state Congress government at any time.  CM Harish Rawat has condemned the statement dubbing it as unconstitutional and undemocratic remark.

In the 70-member state assembly, 35 MLAs belong to Congress while BJP has only 28. The Congress is one short of full majority, and currently running on the support of seven Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) legislatures. In this situation, the Congress is in full command of the situation.

‘BJP has no intention to overthrow the ruling Congress government in state. It’s not BJP leaders, but a certain faction of their own ruling party leaders who are interested to change the political scene of the state,’ Nainital MP and former Uttarakhand CM Bhagat Singh Koshiyari told media.

As soon as the ‘rumour’ of alleged clandestine meeting of former CM and senior Congress leader Vijay Bahuguna with BJP leader Satpal Maharaj in New Delhi on last Monday reached state capital, it created ripples in state politics and gave birth to multiple speculations. However, Satpal denied any meeting with Bahuguna and said that he was not in Delhi at that time when the news broke out.

State Congress chief Kishore Upadhaya claims that BJP is working on the agenda of RSS, and eyeing to grab power in Congress ruling states.

In BJP centre politics, where senior leaders like Vajpayee, Advani and Joshi are side-lined, how can they attack other or read the growing factionalism and indifferences inside the other party, he wondered.

State cabinet minister Dinesh Aggarwal said, ‘It seems that BJP has lost its mental cool after losing by-polls and then Panchayat elections. It is undemocratic and unconstitutional to plan to topple stable government which came to power by winning election in a democratic way. We were also in opposition from 2007 to 2012, but we never use unethical tactics. All the Congress MLAs and ministers are united and the Congress government under CM Harish Rawat is working for the development of state.’
