Around 100 engg students stage protest against ragging in Haldia

Around 100 students of Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology in Haldia boycotted their class on Monday morning protesting against ragging on the institute campus.

On Saturday, five students of the institute were arrested on charges of ragging and abducting a junior student. The five students were accused of beating up Ankit Kumar (21), a first year undergraduate student at the institute. Ankit is a native of Bihar.

Injured Ankit, now under treatment at Haldia sub-divisional hospital, said he was abducted from the institute on Friday afternoon and was driven on a vehicle towards Kolaghat. On the way, he was beaten up by the five second and third year students, and then left abandoned in an injured condition near some bushes by the road at Mecheda. Police and officials of the institute rescued him later in the evening and admitted him to the hospital.

The police have filed a murder case against the five students. Ankit said his five seniors were angry with him because he had lodged a complaint with the institute authorities over ragging by them in the recent past.

Following the complaint, the institute had temporarily suspended the five accused, and this left had them angry.
