Anti-Modi lobby assembles in Gujarat

Trouble seemed to be brewing in Gujarat. The dissidence against Chief Minister Narendra Modi is out in the open. The former chief minister of Gujarat Suresh Mehta is going tooth and nail after Modi. ‘Emergency was better than the rule of Modi,’ said Mehta in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Interestingly, while local leaders of Gujarat conspire against Modi, the Gujarat chief minister was given VIP treatment at the two-day national executive meet of the Bharatiya Janata Dal (BJP) in Mumbai. The party went out of its way to make Modi attend the meet and had made his bete-noire, Sanjay Joshi, resign from the national executive.

It is believed that Gujarat’s BJP might head for troubled days, with Modi’s arch rival and former chief minister Keshubhai Patel orchestrating the show. On Wednesday, a meeting was held at Patel’s residence to discuss the strategy for the upcoming election in the state. It was attended by Mehta, the former union minister Kanshiram Rana and the former minister of state for home Gordhan Zadafia.

In the 2007 assembly election, Patel had campaigned against Modi. Only after the intervention of the national leadership, he stopped attacking Modi. In the last couple of months Patel has been vocal against Modi and had alleged that the Patel community is being threatened.

‘As far as administration is concerned, the situation in Gujarat has gone to dogs,’ said Mehta, while attacking Modi. He added that the meeting was held to discuss Gujarat under Modi’s rule.

‘The BJP leaders and those who had quit the party earlier have come together to discuss the situation, which is going out of hand in Gujarat under Modi,’ said Mehta.
