Anna fails to charm Noida crowds

Anna Hazare’s entourage received a lukewarm response from the people in Noida on Friday,   when it arrived to protest land allocation issues in Greater Noida. What had been touted as a major agitation, turned out to be almost a flop show with hardly any visitors present in the areas  Anna Hazare and VK Singh visited.

The sweltering heat and poor publicity by the agitators coupled with the fact that Team Anna has lost the kind of sheen it used to have two years ago could be probable causes for the low turn-out.

Anna arrived with retired general VK Singh to support the agitating farmers of nearly 70 villages in Greater Noida. The farmers, who have been agitating for 21 days in front of the Greater Noida authorities’ office, had previously disrupted traffic in the city and also blocked two roads leading to the Greater Noida authorities' office.

Anna and his supporters toured key spots such as Chaura Modh and Barola, Bhangel Mandi and Greater Noida to rally support for the farmers’ cause.

In his speech Anna said land grabbing and poor rehabiliation efforts to resettle farmers are symptomatic of the deep corruption in the Greater Noida authority.

Retired general VK  Singh, who was also present said that he supported the farmers agitation fully as it was a just cause.

Though Anna and Singh’s presence failed to draw the crowds, Anna’s supporters labelled the tour a successful one, declaring that by highlighting the cause of the farmers they have managed to make the authorities take notice of their plight.

Manvinder Bhati, the defacto leader of the farmers agitation said, ‘Anna is a reincarnation of Gandhi and his presence has clearly helped focus media attention to our plight'.
