Kolkata: Kolkata and Bidhannagar Police have arranged tight security to foil the 12-hour bandh called by BJP on Wednesday. According to both the police units, a good number of police personnel, along with combat force and Rapid Action Force (RAF), will be deployed throughout the city to prevent any kind of obstruction by the bandh supporters.

On Tuesday, Additional Commissioner of Police (III) of Kolkata Police, Supratim Sarkar, informed that if anybody tries to obstruct normal movement of city residents, police will intervene immediately and secure the people.

"To prevent any obstruction sufficient police personnel will be deployed. No disorderly conduct will be tolerated. Police will take strict action against the law violators," said Sarkar.

Kolkata Police informed that four thousand police personnel, other than officers, will be deployed throughout the city on Wednesday. Senior police officials will monitor the situation from time to time from Lalbazar.

On the field, 21 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) will be supervising the situation. They will be assisted by 70 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs). Along with the senior officials, several police inspectors will also be deployed on the roads. Also, an average of 100 inspectors will be kept in reserve in each division as a contingency plan.

Places like office areas, hospitals, bus terminuses, ferry ghats, Metro stations, markets, malls, etc. will be kept under strict vigilance to prevent any untoward incident.

Police have also marked several vulnerable points across the city, where bandh supporters may obstruct normal traffic. Sources have informed that BJP will take out two rallies in support of the strike. One will be from Hazra area and one will be from Jorasanko area.

Police officials, however, claimed that they have not been intimated about these rallies. "We do not know about any such rallies. We will act upon the information from our Special Branch (SB)," said a senior official of Kolkata Police.

Apart from the officers, 25 divisional mobile vans will patrol the city as well. 25 Heavy Radio Flying Squad (HRFS) units will also be made static in 25 different points. Normally, only 11 HRFS vans are deployed. The number has been increased to maintain the law and order situation in the city. Apart from divisional mobile vans and HRFS, combat force and RAF will also be kept in each division for urgent deployment.

Bidhannagar Police will also deploy approximately 2,000 police personnel throughout the area. HRFS vans will be made static in the office areas and important places. Also, personnel from every police station will be on the road from early morning.

"We have made sufficient arrangements to prevent any obstruction and disorderly conduct and maintain law and order," said a senior official of Bidhannagar Police.

Apart from the police, the Transport department has also made elaborate arrangements to maintain normal traffic movement. The department will run additional busses from every corner of the city to ensure smooth journey of people on Wednesday. The buses will start plying from 5 am.
