Kolkata: Fire broke out in Kolkata's tallest high-rise, currently under construction, at The 42, on Jawaharlal Nehru Road, on Saturday evening around 5 pm. Three fire tenders were immediately rushed to the spot, and no casualties were reported.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, who is also the state Fire minister, visited the spot. He said: "Though the exact reason is yet to be ascertained, the preliminary report suggests that the fire broke out when some welding work was going on. There was a green net that caught fire."

"There was water stored in some containers at the same floor. People working there started throwing water and fire extinguishers were also used to douse the flames," said Chatterjee.

Some people in the area first spotted the fire and informed the matter to the security personnel of the under-construction building. The security personnel took necessary steps and at the same time informed the matter to others present there.

The situation has been brought under control by the firefighters. After extinguishing the flames, the task of ascertaining the exact reason behind it has started.

According to an officer of the state Fire and Emergency Services department, "It is important to ascertain the exact reason behind the incident of fire to bring down chances of such incidents again."

People gathered outside the under-construction 63-storeyed building after seeing flames at the eighth and ninth floors of the building.
