Rash driving by city doctor snuffs out woman's life

New Delhi: A doctor practising with a Delhi-based hospital in central Delhi was arrested after his errant driving killed a woman in DBG Road area on Tuesday.

Police claimed that two other women were injured in the incident. Police identified the accused as Ambuj Garg who was going in his car towards a prominent hospital in North Delhi area when the accident took place. He lives in E4 St Stephen's Hospital.

A case under sections 297 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 A (Causing death by negligence) had been registered in DBG road police station.

Police claimed that they did not found any liquor traces so far. The incident came to light around 10.30 pm on Tuesday when three women identified as Shanno Delvi, Kripali Devi and Geeta were returning home from work.

"When the three reached Rani Jhansi road, opposite government boys middle school near Filmistan they were hit by the car which was driven in a rash and negligent manner," said a police officer.

The impact of the hit was such that Shanno Devi lost her consciousness on the spot and two women received injuries. "The driver of the car saw them and then left the spot," one of the women claimed in her police statement.

The investigating agency claimed that the commuters who were at the spot took the injured to the hospital where Shanno Devi died whereas other two victims are still receiving treatment.

A senior police officer claimed that Garg was nabbed from the spot. "The place where the accident took place, people always cross the road. Three women were crossing the road and the doctor was going towards the hospital in North Delhi when the accident took place. The vehicle has been seized," said the police officer. Two prominent hospitals' names have surfaced where it is suspected that the accused doctor was practising.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa claimed that they are investigating into the case. Sources claimed that there are possibilities that accused is practising in the hospital situated in Central Delhi area.

Data on fatal accidents released by Delhi Traffic Police, accessed by Millennium Post, claimed that in 2017, as many as 504 cases of accidents involving pedestrian were reported. This year, the cases increased to 546.
