IIT Roorkee to aid GMDA in designing comprehensive water management plan

Gurugram: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has roped in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee to prepare a comprehensive water management plan for the Gurugram.

The decision by the agency comes at a time when the public agency is not only looking to conserve water but also improve the water supply network in the city. IIT, Roorkee, has earlier worked on water and recycled water management plans for Noida and Greater Noida, Chennai and other cities.

According to officials, the management of IIT Roorkee will aid GMDA in the recycling of water, enhancing the water distribution network and reducing the wastage of water.

Some of the major challenges that the GMDA faces include control of the line loss, unequal water distribution and pilferage or water theft.

In the current manual system, the authority does not have control over the misuse of water by end-users, leakages and pilferages.

As such, it is estimated that the GMDA fails to save approximately 20% of line loss and 25% of revenue spent on annual maintenance.

According to an official survey, an average Gurugram resident consumes roughly about 250 litres of water every day.

In all the overall requirement of the city is 350 MGD daily. The two water boosting stations at Basai and Chandu Budhera produce over 450 MGD of water that should have been enough yet 45,000 households are either not receiving water supply or getting contaminated water.

Public water officials cite that water being wasted through leakage of pipes, incessant wastage of water and the stronghold of tanker mafia is resulting in the water crisis escalating in the city with every passing year.

Thousands of litres of water is wasted due to the leakage and breaking of the pipe most of which were laid 30 or 40 years ago.

Moreover, host of construction activities that have been occurring in Gurugram have also resulted in the pipes being broken on regular resulting in wastage of water.
