Agri Min flouts norms to ‘accommodate’ DN Thakur

The case relates to inclusion of DN Thakur for the DMD post by the screening committee of the ministry despite knowing that Thakur did not meet the age criterion. It is pertinent to mention here that Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh is the chairman of the screening panel.

According to the documents available with Millennium Post, the ministry has ignored the recommendations of its own screening panel by including one ineligible candidate in the list of candidates called for personal interview scheduled on January 10.

Notably, the panel in its meeting on December 9 had recommended nine candidates out of 17 applicants eligible for the post. Thakur, who was once declared illegible by the panel as he had crossed the required age of 55 years for the post, was later declared eligible, according to a paper signed by joint secretary Raj Singh.

According to sources in the ministry, “The panel has given age relaxation to Thakur, which is a gross violation of recruitment rules set by the government for a deputation post. The age relaxation is given to candidates only in direct recruitment cases, not for deputation. These vacancies are filled by eligible officials of the ministry itself.”

The December 18 document signed by Singh said, “The competent authority may consider relaxing the criteria of age in respect of Thakur and, therefore, it is proposed that he may also be called for personal talk by the panel.”

It’s not that only agriculture minister knows about this flouting of norms, the Prime Minister’s Office also has been intimated about it by some members of Parliament, including BJP MP Keshav Prasad Maurya.

In a letter written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maurya said, “Officials of agriculture ministry have misused their power by giving special privileges to ‘an illegible candidate’ for the post of DMD. Stern action should be initiated against such officials for giving age relaxation to an ‘over age’ candidate, which is applicable in only direct recruitments.”

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh could not be contacted over phone despite repeated attempts, while secretary Ashish Bahaguna refused to comment on the matter.
