85-year-old woman’s body found with throat slit in Barasat

Mystery shrouds the death of an 85-year-old woman whose body was found from inside her house situated at a colony area of Banikantha Nagar in Barasat on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Tarabala Karmakar, was found lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit. She was declared brought dead after being taken to Barasat District Hospital.

The local residents said that her son, Sanat Karmakar, told them that the team of dacoits had stormed into the house and slashed her when she opposed to hand over the valuables. Sanat had been absconding since the incident took place. This had aroused suspicions among the investigating officials whether there was any involvement of Sanat in the incident.

Police have however held Anupama, Sanat’s wife for interrogation. Police were not ruling out the possibility of the couple being involved in the crime.

The police came to know that there had been a quarrel between the elderly woman with his son and daughter-in-law over some family matters.

The local residents told the police that the after the incident Sanat told them that dacoits had attacked his mother when she opposed them to loot valuables and soon disappeared from the spot and did not return. The local people said that they would have been aware about the incident if the armed dacoits would have entered the house in the broad day light. Police are conducting raids in search of Sanat.

The police found some incongruity in the statement of the victim’s daughter-in-law. The local residents were also being interrogated in this connection.
