28-year-old woman found hanging in North 24-Parganas

Mystery shrouds the death of a 28-year-old housewife whose body was found hanging from the ceiling at her in-laws house at Barasat Haritala More in North 24-Parganas on Monday.  On the basis of the complaint lodged by victim Songi Ghosh’s family members, police have arrested her husband Rana Ghosh and mother-in-law Sadhana Ghosh from their house on Monday morning. Police have started a thorough investigation into the matter.

They were remanded in 3-day police custody after being produced before the Barasat Court on Monday.  Police said Songi, who was a resident of Banomalipur in Barasat, got married to Rana Ghosh, a local businessman in January 2015.

The victim’s father has alleged that she had been subjected to mental and physical torture at her in-laws house ever since her marriage.  They also alleged that the victim was strangled to death by her husband and mother-in-law on Sunday.

The accused have, however, told the police that the victim had committed suicide by setting herself on fire. The police have found no trace of fire inside the house.

They found injury marks around her neck. The body has been sent to Barasat District Hospital for the post-mortem. The police are interrogating the family members of the accused and the local residents in this connection.

As per the preliminary investigation, police came to know that the housewife might have been tortured at her in-laws house.  She was humiliated by her husband and other family members since her marriage.
