251 out of 267 pick-pocketeers held in Delhi metro are women: Records

Beware metro commuters from pick-pocketeers! In a shocking revelation it has come to light that more than 267 pick-pocketeers, of which 251 are women have been caught by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) so far this year after the agency launched an anti-pick pocket drive with regard to the Delhi Metro.

These pick-pocketeers were caught by female CISF officials who are deployed in the metro trains in civil dress. ‘The thugs usually follow a pattern. They board and de-board the metro at particular stations and have assigned routes’ said a senior CISF official.

He further said, the officials became familiar with a few faces during the drive with the help of both personal experience and CCTV footages. Soon the agency started maintaining a record of the suspected pick-pocketeers who frequent particular metro routes.

‘Most of them were found to be women, who board the metro in groups and often carry children with them,’ the senior official added.

Records also reveal, ‘Off the total 267 caught, only 14 were handed over to the police, while FIRs were registered against only five thiefs.’

‘It was in the initial stages that we handed them over to the police, but it did not work because of two reasons,’ said another CISF official.

‘Firstly, to register a complaint, the theft must have taken place, and in most of the cases, we caught people (known to us as a pick-pocketeer) before they actually started stealing things. Secondly, there has to be a complainant. In many cases, we recovered cash and other belongings from their possession, which we suspected to be stolen, but no complainants came forward,’ he further said.

It was only in those five cases, where complaints of theft were registered from certain metro stations and, hence, FIRs were filed, he added.

‘Whenever we catch a known pick-pocketeer now, we just take them out of the metro premises,’ the official added.
