12 arrested after clashes between two communities

Tension gripped Majnu ka Tila on Thursday afternoon when a few youngsters indulged into stone pelting, led to a conflict between two youth of rival communities on Wednesday night.

The rivalry between the two communities, which has been going on for the past one year over petty issues, was triggered when an autorickshaw driver, Deepak, who belongs to one community, went into the neighbourhood of another community. This infuriated the community and they thrashed him and his friends. In retaliation, the community people of the victims engaged into a scuffle with the people of the other community and the clash took a violent shape. People of both the communities started pelting stones, bricks and even metal shafts at each other.

Madhur Verma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (North) said: “Twelve people have been detained for rioting. Police personnel have been deployed to keep the situation under control.” According to the police official investigating the matter, they are examining CCTV footages to identify the culprits. Apart from these two communities, nine other communities <g data-gr-id="17">too</g> reside in the area.
