1 in every 4 females and 1 in 20 males suffer from sleep and anxiety disorders

Medical experts claim that almost 80 percent of the diseases that people suffer from stems from anxiety and sleep disorder. However, if addressed and treated appropriately in early stages most of the depression cases can be solved conveniently.

‘I treat 10-15 people complaining of sleep and anxiety and they are in the age group of 5 to 50-year-old. It can be said that one in every 4 females and one in 20 males suffers from anxiety and sleep disorders. Such is the pressure to excel that sometimes people complain for no valid reasons. It can be caused due to excess aggression, suppressed anger, insomnia, reclusion, impotency and complete absence of social life. Besides, there is a increasing disconnect between what the youth desires and what precisely they can achieve in life, hence become withdrawn,’ said Dr. Rajiv Mehta, general secretary of Indian association of private psychiatry at Sir Ganga Ram hospital.

Dr. Rajiv blames marital issues, demanding careers, abnormal reclusion, uncooperative colleagues, weepy spouse, nuclear families and the road rage as prime reasons of anxiety disorder stalking the cities and turning today’s youth restless and highly impulsive. As per WHO report by 2020 depression would the most common disease affecting people across the globe and India undoubtedly will stand second with people affected with depression next to cardiac diseases.

As per the medical experts anxiety is caused by hormones like cortisol and hormone releasing corticotropin, which help react to an instant threat, thereby resulting in anxiety and aggravating Insomnia.

‘Around 10-15 percent of people suffer from primary or secondary Insomnia and this has increased over 10 years. Depression was common earlier too but the number has started to increase at an alarming rate due to lack of awareness about the problem. Also, females are prone to anxiety and sleep disorders due to increased responsibilities and hormonal changes. Anxiety mainly begins from psychological problems, urbanization, unemployment and immigration. The symptoms include severe headache/migraines, difficulty in breathing, sinking sensation, abdominal problems, hyper acidity and loss of appetite.’ said Dr. Madhusudan Singh Solanki, consultant psychiatrist, Saket City hospital.
